went to my first Historic Preservation Commission meeting today in Decatur (they happen monthly). Some guy in the MAK district desperately wanting to put slate shingles on his new construction was vetoed on the basis that what sort of can of worms would this open up for the rest of the neighborhood wanting to put uncommon materials on their homes??! basically. It was tense, you could feel how frustrated he was about it all and what a good job he was doing to hold it all in. But the board had a point and somehow they held their ground.
